The mornings are delightful, but as it gets hot later in the day. The Republican Party plat form committee overwhelmingly declined to endorse the Equal Rights Amendment for women Wednesday. Several major gasoline refin ers, faced with high inventories and an 8 percent drop in gasoline use from last year’s levels, have cut wholesale prices by as much as 3 cents a gallon in the past several days. The first farmers market will be held at The Sunny View Community Building Saturday from 10 to 12. The Polk County Commission ers will hold a public hearing Monday at 7 p.m. in the courthouse to hear a request to zone the Polk County Industrial Park. The Columbus Town Council will meet Monday at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall. C. 28782 Hutcherson-Vance Mrs. Ellen Hutcherson of Columbus has announced the engagement of her daughter, Margaret Nell, to Dr. Stuart Morgan Vance of Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Vance is the son of Dr. Bruce Vance and the late Mrs. Louise Piper Vance of Kentucky. He received his bachelor and master degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville (Ky.) and his Ph D in Linguistics from the Univer sity of Chicago. Miss Hutcherson received her Bachelor of Music Education from Linestone College in Gaffney, S. C. and her Masters in Conducting and Voice from the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Ky. She is now Minister of Music and Youth at the First Baptist Church of West Jefferson, N. C. Miss Hutcherson is also the daughter of Grover Hutcherson of Columbus. An August wedding is planned. Two Attend 4-H Electric Congress Two outstanding 4-H’ers from Polk County will join some 167 Tar Heel youth at the State 4 H Electric Congress July 14 — 16 at East Carolina University in Greenville. She is participating in their Summer Enrichment Pro gram for Superior and Gifted Children and Youth and will be studying Creativity in the Hu manities. A recent graduate of O. P Earle Elementary School, she was one of the authors of ‘Lost in Space,” a school play presented May 8. Among the awards presented her at graduation was a top award in independent research skills in language arts. She was affiliated with the Literary Guild, Chorus, Chess Club, Gymnastics Team and president of the 0. I’ Earle Rocket Club.
